Program Information

The PUC (South Dakota Public Utilities Commission) provides people with information regarding which telecommunications companies in their area are participating in the Lifeline program.

Lifeline is a federal benefit that lowers/reduces the cost of phone (landlines or cell phones), internet or bundled service (only in competitive telephone service territories).
  • Lifeline helps eligible consumers save up to $5.25 on phone service or $9.25 toward their monthly broadband bill. Subscribers may receive a discount on either phone or internet, but not both. The program is limited to one line per household.
People on tribal lands:
  • Tribal Lifeline helps eligible residents of tribal lands save up to $34.25 on their monthly phone, internet or bundled services. The discount applies to landline or wireless residential telephone service plans and is limited to one line per household.
    • Eligible consumers may also be able to sign up for free toll blocking or toll limitation service that either blocks or limits long-distance calls from your phone.
  • Tribal Link Up provides a one-time discount for the connection or activation charge for new telephone service at the applicant's primary residence.
    • Eligible consumers may receive a discount up to $100.00, of the charge for starting telecommunications service at a Tribal Lifeline subscriber's primary residence.
    • Link Up also allows you to pay any remaining amount owed on initiation of service (up to $200.00) on a deferred schedule, interest free.
