Arise Youth Center provides detention alternatives for youth in Minnehaha County, including:

  • Reception Center: Safe environment for law enforcement can transport youth to wait to be picked up by a parent or approved adult, staff complete screenings and offer resources to the youth and their parent or guardian.
  • Shelter Care: Temporary care as an alternative to going into a secure detention facility if the youth does not require that level of service. Assists youth and their parent or guardian through a screening process to identify needs and community resources along with a discharge plan in collaboration with the court system.
  • Safe place: For runaway homeless youth to access services on a walk-in basis.
  • Evening Reporting Center: An alternative to detention that allows youth to remain in the community while receiving additional services. Services include 4 hours of programming that incorporates homework help, meal planning and preparation and job skill development.

Immediate shelter services are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Trained staff is on-site to assist with the needs of anyone with safety issues seeking shelter. Case management, counseling, advocacy, support groups, parenting groups, and activities for children are offered and provided. Meals are provided and personal care items and clothing are available as needed at no cost to the client.

Crisis intervention services include crisis phone, crisis drop-in counseling, support groups, parenting classes, 911 phones to public, safety planning, referrals to community resources, assistance with filling out protection orders, and court advocacy. Applications available to help victims of crime apply for victims compensation.

Individual, child and family counseling is available to victims of abuse. Public education presentations are available upon request.

The goal of the VOA Axis180 is to assist homeless young people in making a successful transition to self sufficiency, prevent long-term dependency on the social services system, and provide an option for older youth who need assistance in transitioning into adulthood.

Shelter services for youth are referred by law enforcement in Pennington County, Runaway or have the propensity to become runaway, Homeless or have the propensity to become homeless or In the Department of Social Services or Department of Corrections custody.

Reception Center: Youth screening process with recommendations are made for services and programs.

Runaway and Homeless Shelter: Accepts youths who have been referred by self, community agencies, schools, law enforcement, etc. Runaway and homeless youth are eligible to stay up to 21 days. During that time, case management services are provided and attempts are made to connect youth with longer term, more stable living arrangements. This includes screening with the youth to identify needs, community resources, and a discharge plan to help them to have more stability following discharge.

Shelter Care: For youth, referred through Law Enforcement, Pennington County, DSS, or DOC. A short term (30 days or less) group care facility that will assist youth and their parent or guardian through a screening process to identify needs, community resources, and a discharge plan in collaboration with the family and referring agency.
