What We Do

Hi there! My name is Susan Kroger, and I started my new position as Resource Development Director at the Helpline Center just a few short months ago. I started this journey as one starts any, with a little trepidation and a lot of anticipation. Since starting, I’ve jumped in with both feet and have enjoyed learning about my new role.

After I was hired, I excitedly told my friends and family the news. They were, in turn, quite thrilled for me. After the initial excited conversation, the refrain was almost always the same: “What exactly do you guys DO at the Helpline Center?”

Initially, my answer was a bit scattered. “Well, we HELP people. It’s in our name and everything.” Now, I’m much more adept at sharing both our mission and service areas. I’ve been amazed at the number of services we provide to the local community and beyond.

Prior to working here I was well acquainted with the 211 Helpline, which refers callers to resources and/or support within the community. I utilized this service often as a counselor searching for client resources. I could pick up any phone in Sioux Falls, dial 211 and ask a question about local resources:

“Where can my client find food for her kids tonight?”

“Where can my client take her 4 year old for play therapy?”

And every time, I would receive a quick and easy answer.

I also had experience working with the Helpline Center’s volunteer services to both find volunteers for nonprofit events and to volunteer at local agencies myself. I participated in a Volunteer Sioux Falls event where several friends and I were able to help at a local shelter for the day. The experience was rewarding, and I learned a great deal about an agency that houses families in the Sioux Falls area.

Additionally, the Helpline Center offers a number of supportive services, including suicide and crisis support, childcare referral, and military and family support. Last year, we answered over 46,000 calls and helped connect thousands of people to volunteer opportunities.

    In the past year, I have also encountered the Helpline Center in a few different ways. However, my favorite experience was being a judge for the Spirit of Volunteerism awards. It was so great having the opportunity to read nominations submitted about the outstanding volunteers in our community and the organizations they give their time to. The Helpline Center does such a great job connecting people to life-changing volunteer opportunities in Sioux Falls and beyond.

    As a therapist, I rely on the Helpline to connect my clients with important services. There is no way one person can keep up with everything available in the region. The Helpline is a lifesaver!
