May SALSA Wide Events - Making Community Gardening Accessible to All!
Sponsored by: Disability Awareness Commission
Location: Near Falls Park
Date: Saturday, May 1st
For this one of a kind SALSA-wide event, SALSA partnered with the City of Sioux Falls and the Disability Awareness Commission to create community garden plots that are easier to use for the disabled and elderly members of our community! Members constructed 6 raised garden beds, and filled them with dirt so that each one is a canvas of flowers and vegetables in the coming months!
April SALSA Wide Events - Annual Lions Pancake Days
Date: April 12 - 14, 2010
Flip out with SALSA in April at the Annual Lions Pancake Days. The Lions will be flipping pancakes for thousands of people, and hoping to raise thousands of dollars to help prevent blindness and provide glasses to people in our area that have a low income. The Downtown Lions also help support the SALSA program in a variety of ways such as: sponsoring Make A Difference Day; sponsoring the Youth Vision Workshop and the SALSA Recognition Luncheon.

Location: Kids Against Hunger - corner of 33rd and Minnesota
Students broadened their global awareness during this day of learning and serving! Students ate lunch during the Hunger Banquet experience, learned more about our global community, and heard the life stories from a panel of international high school students. The day ended with a hands-on, international service project – packing rice that was sent to Haiti, and making tie-blankets for refugees.
February SALSA Wide Events - Olympic Games for Seniors

20 students helped pass on the torch of Olympic excitement by helping SALSA facilitate Olympic-type events such as: basketball, volleyball, weightlifting, bowling, and ring toss for residents in the senior apartments, assisted living and long term care programs. This event brought together our community’s past, present, and future generations!

Location: Avera Prince of Peace Retirement Community 19 students helped pass on the torch of Olympic excitement by helping SALSA facilitate Olympic-type events such as: basketball, volleyball, weightlifting and Wii sports for residents in the senior apartments, assisted living and long term care programs. This event brought together our community’s past, present, and future generations!
January SALSA Event #1 - Senior Box Lunches at the Food Bank
Date: Saturday, January 9 at the Food Bank warehouse
21 high school students volunteered a total of 92.25 hours at the Food Bank for the Senior Box Lunches program. Adults, at least 60 years of age, who use this program can receive a commodity once a month for six to twelve months. The package includes a variety of food including: cereals, canned meat, canned fruits, instant milk, peanut butter, instant potatoes, and pasta products.
January SALSA Event #2 - Dinner at The Banquet
Date: Friday, January 29 at The Banquet
One out of seven individuals in South Dakota lives at or below the poverty line. Every day, citizens in our own community are looking for ways to stretch their budget for meeting the basic needs of their families, and the Banquet is there to help fill the gap. 52 SALSA members served a total of 129.5 hours by providing an evening meal of spaghetti from start to finish.
December SALSA Wide Event - Gift Wrapping at the Empire Mall for Children's Inn
Date: Saturday, December 12 & Saturday, December 19
60 student and 3 teacher volunteers served 132.25 hours by gift wrapping at the Empire Mall for Children's Inn. Last year this program raised over $24,000 to benefit the Children’s Inn! Because of events like this, Children’s Inn is able to provide free services to the victims of domestic violence.
November SALSA Wide Event - Volunteer of America's Thriftstore
On Saturday, November 14th, SALSA volunteers were invited to serve in this fun working environment where creativity is encouraged helping meet the basic needs of the members of our community every day. Volunteers helped the store in a variety of ways including: sorting the donated items, arranging and cleaning displays, working the cash register, and miscellaneous tasks (ie. possibly painting a mural).
October SALSA Wide Event - Make a Difference Day!
Date: Saturday, October 24th
Two group service projects were offered this day:
- Rake the Town - SALSA members raked the yards of people who can't do it themselves, and have no one else who can help them.
- Habitat for Humanity - Other SALSA students helped at one of the Habitat houses doing painting and landscaping for a deserving family.
Both groups met together at the end for lunch provided by Downtown Lions group and to process the day's events.
September SALSA Wide Event
Second Chance Rescue Center
On Saturday, September 26, 2009, 83 SALSA members joined together serving 180 hours helping the animals at Second Chance Rescue Center. See our Photo Gallery page for a few pictures of the day.
